Cord Blood Banks

Due to the promise of using hematopoietic stem cells obtained from cord blood to treat blood and immune system related diseases, the cord blood banking industry has experienced tremendous interest, with new public and private cord blood banks opening every year.

Since the first successful cord blood transplant was performed in 1988, thousands of patients have received transplants from cells derived from cord blood.

In 2006, the Syndey Cord Blood Bank published the results of an independent comparison of our CryoStor CS5 and CryoStor CS10 and a cryopreservation media formulation of 10% DMSO in dextran-40.

Results

Cells frozen with CryoStorTM in 10% DMSO had significantly
improved NC (P<0.001), CD34+ recovery, viable CD34+ (P<0.001) and CFU numbers (P<0.001) compared with dextran in 10% DMSO.

CryoStorTM in 5% DMSO resulted in significantly improved
NC (P<0.001) and CFU (P<0.001).
